Actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood’s directorial debut, Fateh, hit theaters on Friday, earning Rs 2.45 crore on its opening day. The action-packed film, which also stars Jacqueline Fernandez, competes with S. Shankar’s highly anticipated Game Changer, featuring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani.
According to box office tracking platform Sacnilk, Fateh recorded modest earnings compared to Game Changer, whose Hindi-dubbed version grossed Rs 7 crore on its first day. Across all five languages— Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam — Game Changer amassed Rs 51.25 crore on Friday. Despite stiff competition, Fateh is expected to see an uptick in collections over the weekend.
In a statement shared on social media, Sonu Sood revealed the inspiration for Fateh. He explained that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed him to numerous stories of cybercrime victims. “Many people reached out to me during the pandemic, seeking help after falling prey to fraud and losing their hard-earned money. These stories deeply affected me, and I felt compelled to bring the issue to light through cinema,” Sood said.
The film’s ticket pricing strategy also reflects Sood’s commitment to accessibility. Tickets were priced at Rs 99 on the first day to ensure affordability for a wider audience. Additionally, Sood pledged to donate the film’s profits to charitable causes, reinforcing his dedication to social responsibility.
Fateh narrates a gripping story centered on the fight against cybercrime, inspired by real-life incidents during the pandemic. Produced by Shakti Sagar Productions and Zee Studios, the film features an ensemble cast, including Vijay Raaz and Naseeruddin Shah, alongside Sood and Fernandez. Hollywood professionals were involved in the cinematography, research, and action choreography, lending the film an international appeal.
The film has received mixed reviews. Critics praised Sood’s performance and the ambitious action sequences. A review highlighted, “Sood’s portrayal anchors the film, and his dedication to delivering high-quality action is evident.” However, it noted that the film largely adheres to genre conventions, with its international treatment standing out as a key strength.
With Saturday and Sunday offering the potential for higher footfalls, Fateh is geared upfor a possible rise in collections.
